Global Education in an Art Classroom

Updated: Apr 28, 2021

"A global education is one that incorporates learning about the cultures, geographies, histories, and current issues of all the world's regions. It emphasizes the interconnectedness and diversity of peoples and histories. Global education develops students' skills to engage with their global peers and highlights actions students can take as citizens of the world. It is a lens that can be applied to all disciplines and all grade levels as well as the broader school community" (Primary Source - Educating Global Citizens).

The simplest way to go about introducing global education into my art classroom, is to teach about artists and art techniques from around the world. I think that many art classroom are moving towards this, and away from old teaching about the "masters", aka the old dead white men. This is really important because there is so much art coming from everywhere and everyone around the world. The practice of art making is universal and never from one perspective. Introducing artwork from different places can teach my students to break down stereotypes about certain parts and people of the world, while also learning about art.

Looking into Global Art Education using technology is a bit different, the following are some resources I have found:

Asian Art Museum: this is a museum website where artworks from all around Asia can be viewed and pulled as inspiration for project in your own art classroom. One my personal favorite parts of this website is the "For the Teachers" that sometimes offers workshops for teachers where they introduce artworks and then offer ways to possibly incorporate that into your own classroom setting for students.

Google Arts & Culture: This a great resource for students to explore artworks and artists. It doesn't have everything, however, still can be a great resource for expanding learning. It includes games, museum tours, closer looks at artworks, and more.

Ted-Ed: The Arts: This links to lesson ideas that come from videos that an educator could pull inspiration from or possibly show to the class. This is not only for the arts! You can search and filter for many other subjects. Students van also view these videos on their own and create artworks based on their own choice and project ideas.
