Teaching Philosophy

My art teaching philosophy has everything to do with my future students. This is Accredited to my love for working with children, discovered through my years of coaching school-aged children. My teaching philosophy is a dedication to adapting and evolving my teaching to support a student-centered, inclusive, and safe classroom.

Students need to have choice, passion, and feel safe in my classroom. I firmly believe that it is the teacher's responsibility to create a community in their classroom where students feel safe to open up and put themselves into their artwork without fear of invalidation or judgment. In many ways, knowing and putting them first can become more important than running a "perfect" lesson. My lessons will consistently aim for the growth of my students academically but also as individuals. These students that I will have the opportunity to inspire and impact are the future of our society, meaning that I will be vigilant in talking about the contemporary world.

The success of my goals within my teaching philosophy lies in the importance of respect in the classroom. Respect fits into every aspect of my philosophy, and it is at the center of every lesson and interaction. If students are feeling safe enough to self-express, be vulnerable, and talk about or create something they are passionate about, there needs to be that foundation of respect and understanding for one another. My job as a teacher is not solely to teach art, it is to facilitate the work that goes into becoming a kind, caring and successful person within a society.
