INCLUSION
This is important as a teacher to facilitate because then everyone can receive equitable learning experiences. A safe environment where every student no matter their background, philosophies, culture, race, or sex are welcome leads to better engagement in general. If people feel include and safe, they will participate more freely and fear less of disapproval or failure.
INTEGRITY
Following the importance of inclusion, Integrity is able to shine. Students are more willing to take accountability for their actions if they feel like they are safe and wont be exiled. Obviously, integrity is also important because everything a student share should be their own.
RESPECT
I believe that all community guidelines revolve around respect. If there is no respect there cant be a safe environment. There's no way there is inclusion if teachers and students don't respect one another. Respect is at the core of every successful class.
SERVICE
A classroom also relies on this sense of service. If everyone is there to help one another have an easier class, no one will be left behind. I think of the idea that if everyone picks up one piece of trash the room will be clean is taught in younger classes for this very reason.
SOCIAL JUSTICE
The simplest from if this in my brain is "treat others how you want to treated". Things should be fair in a classroom and there should be understanding that everyone is coming from a different place.
I truly believe that in order for any community guidelines to succeed there always have to be a basis of respect. Without respect, no one can be promised any sort of rules. You don't have to like everyone in your class, not even your teacher! BUT YOU MUST RESPECT THEM in order for everyone to be heard, truthful, engaged, and helpful in any sense. I chose to start with the base of respect in my art. I let everything else grow from that respect. Therefore, I drew the word "respect" as if it were a planter or pot that is growing flower and plants that represent the community guidelines.
I think that creating community guidelines with my students will be my best bet. I want everyone in my classroom to be heard and to feel safe. Rita Pierson says in her TEDTalk that you may not like all your students, but you must not ever let them know. Students need relationships to learn and community guidelines are a great way to start that together.
