"Let's Eat"
A Two Day Lesson
Big Ideas
-
Culture
-
Identity / Individuality
Project Description:
Students will take on the role of a 3D artist and represent their culture using 3D materials to create a realistic model of foods they eat in their cultures (clay, Sculpey clay).
Essential Understanding
-
Students will understand the importance of cultural identity concerning food traditions.
-
Students will understand how the food they eat relates to the cultural history of their families and connects them to a larger, ethnic community.
Objectives
Day Two: Creating 3D Food Sculptures
-
Upon watching the artist process video, students will ideate ways in which they can create their final food model in steps.
(Reflect, GLE 2: Synthesize ideas about personal works of art and imagine possible next steps, SHoM: Envision, Art Learning: Conceptual-Ideation)
-
Using contemporary artist examples, such as Lucy Sparrow, students will be able to observe artworks made by another artist to talk about how another artist creates realistic 3D food art.
(Comprehend, GLE 1: Investigate works of art and design to recognize how to create meaning with purpose and intent, SHoM: Understanding Art World, Observe, Art Learning: Art Analysis)
-
Using compiled research, students will create a 3D model of their research food, with a new understanding of their traditions and culture.
(Envision and Critique to Reflect 1: Demonstrate an understanding of how intent and purpose are informed by research and experimentation, SHoM: Develop Craft, Engage and Persist, Art Learning: Materials and Techniques)
-
Provided a Demo, students will use the sculpting techniques demonstrated in class in the creation of their realistic 3D food model
(Create, GLE 1: Plan and create works of visual art and design recognizing various purposes and intentions, SHoM: Engage and Persist, Art Learning: Materials and Techniques)
-
Through the participation of a gallery walk, students will observe fellow artists' clay food models and write down 3 things they learned about foods from their classmates' cultures. (Literacy: writing)
(Transfer, GLE 1: Recognize how works of visual art and design communicate meaning both within a community and between diverse cultures, SHoM: Observe, Art Learning: Critical Reflection)
