"Let's Eat"

A Two Day Lesson

Project Description: 

Students will take on the role of a 3D artist and represent their culture using 3D materials to create a realistic model of foods they eat in their cultures (clay, Sculpey clay).

Essential Understanding

  • Students will understand the importance of cultural identity concerning food traditions.

  • Students will understand how the food they eat relates to the cultural history of their families and connects them to a larger, ethnic community.

Objectives

Day One

  • Using an anchor text, “My Food, Your Food, Our Food”, students will observe how different artists in different cultures represent individual identities through the traditions of making and eating different foods. 

  • (Comprehend, GLE 1: Investigate works of art and design to recognize how to create meaning with purpose and intent, SHoM: Observe, Understand Art World, Art Learning: Art Analysis, Literacy: Reading)

  • Using research techniques, students will Identify a food from their culture, write down 4 facts about the chosen food, and choose 2 reference images.

  • (Create, GLE 1: Plan and create works of visual art and design recognizing various purposes and intentions, SHoM: Stretch and Explore, Envision, Art Learning: Conceptual-Ideation, Technology: Computers, Literacy: Reading)

  • Using compiled research, students will share their chosen food and a fact they learned about it during the end of class discussion.

  • (Reflect, GLE 1: Demonstrate an understanding of how intent and purpose are informed by research and experimentation, SHom: Reflect, Art Learning:  Conceptual-Ideation)
